The bottom line is that we have to destroy ourselves-- our egos, our basic needs-- to create anything of any merit, of any artistic value. A bit of us dies in the creation of art, just as mothers lose their teeth in creating a baby within themselves. Every work of art, book, painting, performance, song, should be as painfully borne from within us, taking as much from us as the act of birth. And being destroyed in this pursuit, we are then made strong again. The perpetual phoenix. Always rising, always being repaired.
